Pioneering Sustainable Energy Solutions

Governments and corporations are striving towards ambitious climate goals amid growing climate emergencies and escalating global energy demands. These objectives aim to minimize environmental impact and ensure a sustainable future. The transition to electrification is pivotal in reducing carbon emissions and utilizing renewable energy sources. As a significant stride in this global movement, Onsemi has introduced its latest silicon carbide technology, the EliteSiC M3e MOSFETs. The company also announced plans to roll out several more generations by 2030.

Enhancing Electrification Infrastructure

According to Simon Keeton, group president of the Power Solutions Group, advanced power semiconductors are crucial for the future of electrification. Today’s infrastructure cannot adequately meet the needs of a smarter society and electrified mobility without substantial advancements in electricity. EliteSiC M3e MOSFETs are poised to enhance the efficiency and reliability of next-generation electrical systems at a lower cost per kW. This innovation will significantly impact the adoption and success of electrification projects.

Cutting-edge technology for Maximum Efficiency

Onsemi’s EliteSiC M3e MOSFETs leverage a robust and proven planar architecture, significantly reducing both conduction and switching losses through unique design engineering and manufacturing capabilities. Compared to previous generations, the platform can reduce turn-off losses by up to 50% and minimize conduction losses by 30%. By extending the life of SiC planar MOSFETs, Onsemi ensures the durability and stability of the platform, making it a preferred choice for critical electrification applications.

Advancements in Power Modules and Cost Efficiency

The 1200V M3e die, integrated into Onsemi’s advanced discrete and power modules, offers a substantially higher phase current than previous EliteSiC technology. This results in approximately 20% more output power within the same traction inverter housing. Additionally, the design of a given power level can now use 20% less SiC, saving costs and enabling the creation of lighter, more reliable, and smaller systems.

A Vision for the Future of Electrification

Dr. Mrinal Das, senior director of technical marketing at Power Solutions Group, emphasized the technological interdependence of silicon carbide materials, devices, and packages. This interdependence allows Onsemi to control the design and production process, accelerating the introduction of new generations to the market, thanks to their complete ownership of these critical components.

In conclusion, Onsemi’s EliteSiC M3e MOSFETs mark a significant advancement in the field of electrification, driving forward global efforts to achieve sustainability and energy efficiency. As the world continues to face mounting climate challenges, innovations like these play a vital role in paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future.
