Positive Momentum in Semiconductor Sales

The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) announced that global semiconductor sales reached $46.4 billion in April 2024, marking a 15.8% increase compared to April 2023’s $40.1 billion. This also represents a 1.1% rise from March 2024’s $45.9 billion. These monthly sales figures, compiled by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization, are based on a three-month moving average.

Industry Forecast Predicts Strong Growth

A new forecast by WSTS predicts that annual global sales will grow by 16.0% in 2024, with a further increase of 12.5% in 2025. SIA, which represents nearly all of the U.S. semiconductor industry and a significant portion of global chip firms, highlighted the robust growth and positive momentum as the year progressed.

Comments from SIA Leadership

John Neuffer, SIA president and CEO, remarked on the industry’s performance, stating, “The global semiconductor industry has seen double-digit sales increases year-over-year each month in 2024. April’s month-to-month sales growth is the first this year, indicating positive market momentum as we approach mid-year. The latest industry forecast also points to strong annual growth in 2024, driven primarily by the Americas market, which is expected to grow by over 25% this year.”

Regional Sales Performance

Year-over-year sales for April saw significant increases in the Americas (32.4%), China (23.4%), and Asia Pacific/All Other regions (11.1%), while Europe (-7.0%) and Japan (-7.8%) experienced declines. On a month-to-month basis, sales rose in the Americas (4.2%), Japan (2.4%), and China (0.2%), but dropped in Asia Pacific/All Other (-0.5%) and Europe (-0.8%).

Highest-Ever Sales Projected

SIA also endorsed the WSTS Spring 2024 global semiconductor sales forecast, which anticipates that annual global sales will reach $611.2 billion in 2024, setting a new record for the industry. By 2025, global sales are projected to hit $687.4 billion. These forecasts are based on input from a broad range of global semiconductor companies, offering reliable indicators of industry trends.
