A Landmark Achievement in Semiconductor Manufacturing

Rajasthan-based Sahasra Semiconductors has made history by becoming the first Indian company to successfully produce memory chips, marking a significant milestone in the country’s semiconductor industry. The company has surpassed global giant Micron Technology, initiating the commercial production of “Made in India” memory chips at its state-of-the-art semiconductor assembly, testing, and packaging unit in Bhiwadi district, Rajasthan.

Empowering Indian Innovation

In a move that underscores India’s growing prowess in semiconductor manufacturing, Sahasra Semiconductors has achieved the distinction of being the first to offer “Made-in-India” micro-SD cards. The products have garnered exceptional responses on e-commerce platforms, according to Amrit Manwani, Sahasra Group Managing Director, as reported by the Economic Times.

Strategic Investments and Future Plans

Sahasra’s journey in the semiconductor arena began in 2000, founded by an IIT Kanpur graduate. Varun Manwani, Sahasra CEO, revealed in a recent interview with Moneycontrol that the initial investment for the company stands at approximately Rs 350 crore for the first phase. Of this, Rs 160 crore has already been committed to plant and machinery. The second phase, projected at around Rs 190 crore over two to three years, will see the company expanding its semiconductor production capabilities.

Sahasra’s Growth Trajectory

The Bhiwadi unit is poised to increase its capacity to 30 percent by the end of this year. Sahasra Semiconductors plans to fully unleash its potential in the upcoming phase, set to commence in early 2024. Varun Manwani highlighted that the second phase will involve advanced packaging of products, including internal memory chips, further solidifying the company’s position in the semiconductor market.

Government Support and Approvals

Sahasra Semiconductors has received approval under two pivotal government initiatives aimed at bolstering semiconductor manufacturing in India. The production-linked incentive (PLI) program for components and subassemblies of white goods, along with the scheme for the promotion of the manufacturing of electronic components and semiconductors (SPECS), provides crucial support. Under SPECS, Sahasra is entitled to 25 percent of the capital expenditure for setting up or expanding its manufacturing facility, facilitating the company’s semiconductor production endeavors.

Optimism for India’s Semiconductor Future

Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, expressed optimism on October 27 about India’s potential to become a significant semiconductor manufacturing hub. He emphasized the substantial talent pool in the country, positioning India as a key player in the global semiconductor landscape.

Sahasra Semiconductors’ groundbreaking achievement not only signifies technological advancement but also strengthens India’s position as a formidable player in the semiconductor industry. The company’s commitment to innovation and strategic growth reflects a promising future for India’s semiconductor landscape.
