India just took another big step toward building its semiconductor future. Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has given the go-ahead for the establishment of the NaMo Semiconductor Laboratory at IIT Bhubaneswar — a move that signals strong momentum in the country’s push for chip design, manufacturing, and advanced research.
A Strategic Investment in Chip Innovation
The upcoming lab, with an estimated cost of ₹4.95 crore, is designed to be a cutting-edge center equipped with the tools and software needed for semiconductor design, fabrication, and training. According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the facility will serve as a major training ground for engineers and researchers, helping India build a workforce ready for the semiconductor industry’s next wave of growth.
Strengthening India’s Tech Backbone
This initiative aligns closely with the government’s broader goal of transforming India into a global semiconductor hub — a country that not only consumes chips but also designs and manufactures them. The lab will play a crucial role in nurturing talent capable of supporting upcoming chip manufacturing and packaging plants across the nation.
Powering ‘Make in India’ and ‘Design in India’
Officials highlight that the NaMo Semiconductor Lab will act as a catalyst for India’s fast-growing semiconductor ecosystem, reinforcing national programs like ‘Make in India’ and ‘Design in India.’ With the global chip market expanding rapidly, India aims to claim a larger share of the international value chain — driving innovation at home while reducing dependence on imports.
A Step Toward Technological Independence
As the world races to secure chip supply chains, India’s investment in semiconductor education and R&D is more than just an infrastructure project — it’s a strategic leap toward technological self-reliance. The NaMo Semiconductor Laboratory at IIT Bhubaneswar stands as a symbol of that vision: a future where Indian engineers design, fabricate, and power the chips that run the world.
